Preserving the nature
We live near the coast of Mediterranean and want a healthy and clean sea that contains a diverse and bountiful marine life. We love and value our coastal waters and want to see them well managed. But our coastal lifestyle is increasing the threat to the very things that attract us to the sea. Apart from this a new threat is tourism investments resulting closing the shores to public.
West Antalya's marine and estuarine environments also have substantial biological and economic value. The Government therefore has a responsibility to protect marine habitats and their biodiversity and to provide community leadership and direction for their sustainable use, improved management and conservation. The administration sees its role as one of custodian of these resources, in a way that encourages collaboration with the people living here.
The Earth's climate is changing. Climate change, commonly known as global warming, could have a devastating impact on the planet’s plants and animals and their habitats. Also the shift of population to coastal counties like Demre and the increased demand for coastal tourism destinations would make more severe many existing beach erosion problems. Development in areas with high erosion rates and building on or in front of sand dunes, rather than behind them, will be major factors contributing to increased beach erosion problems. Relative sea-level rise caused primarily by subsidence is another major factor in Andriake beach. The interruption of sand flowing along the coast by natural or stabilized inlets is also an aggravating factor.
Loggerheads nest on sandy beaches at night. Beymelek, Kömürlük and Karaemlik sea shores of Demre provide proper nesting possibilities for gradually increasing population of these turtles. Coastal development must cover the protection necessities of these creatures. In some places (no activity in Demre yet) nesting area is protecting by police buffers but this is just a temporary solution.
The sea side of Demre
The beaches between Sülüklü and Taşdibi, Kömürlük and Demre stream provide a natural resource that is used for recreational purposes and attracts tourists and visitors to Demre. The coasts lie almost several kilometers away are generally lonely and very clean. The shores also afford protection to coastal development, particularly during storm attack in the winters, by reducing the impact of wave energy on the coast. However, the dune system is slowly eroding due to the natural coastal processes (the rough winds flow the sand to close the roads even.), in addition to take the sand for construction purposes in Taşdibi, and it is necessary to provide a management strategy to maintain the sandy beaches and protect the coastal development. Fortunately, excluding Sülüklü and Andriake, the rest of the beaches already lost their sands but pebbles. A study must be commissioned which led to the creation of the Coast Protection rules, main construction regulations on the coasts, establishing public usage areas to coordinate and facilitate the urgent activities needed to artificially maintain the Demre coast.
This study will establish the strategy to protect the Demre beaches using beach replenishment to maintain beach levels and seawalls as a backup measure, especially where sandy beaches could not be maintained due to the shape of the coast such as at Sülüklü.
On the other hand a review of the coast protection strategy must be carried out that assess the methods of coast protection required for beach replenishment. Alternatives must be examined including construction of offshore breakwaters. A review can be endorsed beach replenishment but the beach replenishment programme can be changed a programme primarily trucking sand to one where the main beach replenishment is by dredging sand onto Andriake beach.
To construct wooden quays through sea may be helpfull for shallow water beaches like Andriake and Sülüklü
Beymelek fish weir
There is a state owned fishery at the 6th km. on the way to Finike. This is a lagoon seperated from the sea with a thin waterway. The bass, gilt-headed bream (cipura in Turkish) are produced and snake fishes are breeding here. The crab can be catched too.
The intentions of opening a branch of the Mediterranean University on sea fishing and culture fishing etc., are never realized. Some postgraduate students from other universities are coming here for practicing.
The important topic
To provide the state funds for prevention the coastal beach erosion and progression is vital for Demre. This includes for investigation or study functions as well as personnel and other sources for funding of projects necessary for progression the usage, flood control, and drainage, or beach erosion control projects.
Once upon a time, stream basin and surrounding water surfaces were full of black ducks, flamingos, pelicans, various sea birds, gooses and several migrating birds. The most important matter in here the human quality and the common understanding. Some of the people living here are describing themselves as hunter and consider himself deserved the right of destroying somewhere. In order to stop bird hunting any more Demre municipality announced some area as bird observation sanctuary and declared some penalties for placing the hunting prohibition. They also made a wooden bird observatory balcony.
This non-profit bird sanctuary, is the largest at surrounds. But has no wild bird hospital or rehabilitation center. However, the sanctuary might be dedicated to the rescue, repair, rehabilitation and release of healthy indigenous wild birds also be experienced to breed wild birds in captivity.
The Sanctuary is not staffed by experienced professionals and dedicated volunteers and it is not a bird sanctuary for disabled and injured birds. Nowadays everything is continuing like before, hunting, disturbing etc. the only remained from good old days is announcement itself.

Demre is also lean to the mountains. This is the reason why it has a unique climate by seperating with those mountains. The highest peak is Muskar mountain at 1850m of it an antique solar supervision cave discovered recently. It has been said that this cave was being used by the uncle of Father Noel. The higher level of mountains are covered with forests. On the plateau of north-west of Demre there are cedar tree forests producing very generous oxygen. How to Achieve
Ecologically Sensitive
Development
In Ecologically Based Demre Land Use Planning, solutions to not in more laws and regulations, but in much Demre citizens and also tourism investments in the near future control over land use. Among the strategies the urges communities to implement to achieve more sound land-use policies are these:
• Make Demre municipal master plans, rather than zoning, the central guiding principle in land-use planning and development.
• Incorporate the local "ecological infrastructure" into Demre municipal master plan for primary consideration in decisions about development and land use.
• Draw on adequate scientific research about environmental conditions and combine this with locally appropriate "ecological indicators" to assess and monitor the health of natural resources in Demre area.
• Use tools such as geographic information systems (GIS) to aid planning decisions.
• Involve representatives from all sectors of the community—including Demre citizens, planning experts, conservationists, business and industry leaders, elected officials and developers—more directly in local decisions about land use, especially to decide what features of the Demre's environment must be preserved at any cost.
• Fulfilment the obligations of conventions signed by Turkish government in addition to the communication and cooperation with international
organizations.
The tools are there, the information is there, now the question is, what do we do in Demre about it?"
